"When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains, and the women come
out to cut up what remains, jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
and go to your gawd like a soldier."

At least we're leaving before suffering a surprise massacre.

When the Soviets left, after 8 years and 15,000 casualties, they were shot
at all the way to the border. They pulled out in the middle of the night in
a really big hurry.

We are blithering idiots. Bush said the other day he sees no reason to
defend his record. Move along, nothing to be seen here.

My Afghan friends, students, to the last one want us to stay, fearing what
will happen when we leave. And, to the last one, they all plan on returning
to Afghanistan to work for their country's future. A very impressive group
of young men, all very bright, and determined to be patriots and fight for
their country and society. They report it is hell back home.

So they're not interested in immigration reform? Sounds like whatever comes
out of that will be long delayed and arduous. People coming off Ellis Island
were
citizens within hours.

Very difficult to become an American these days. In the case of my student
friends, probably impossible. They are resigned to this reality and sound
sincere to me when they speak of returning home to work for peace and an end
to conflict. They are a tough bunch, and very smart.
